Stage direction
Dr. Barrera’s stage direction is defined by a refined balance between innovation and tradition, reimagining canonical works while preserving their musical and dramatic integrity. She currently serves as Director of Opera at Georgia Southern University, where she leads a program centered on dynamic storytelling and artist development.
As a stage director, she has created inventive productions for companies such as Opera Naples, including Die Zauberflöte and La bohème for their Festival Under the Stars. For the festival, she designed and created the scenic projections across all productions, incorporating interactive, AI-driven visual environments that enhanced narrative cohesion and audience engagement.
Her work spans concept-driven reinterpretations and traditionally grounded stagings, including a 1920s reimagining of Die Fledermaus and Mozart’s Così fan tutte “a lo Cubano.” These projects highlight her distinctive artistic voice and her ability to craft visually compelling, contemporary opera experiences.
